Garmin 76S GPS

While I don’t think that anything will ever entirely replace a map, compass, and the common sense to use them
properly, a GPS is a handy little gadget to have around. I use my Garmin 76S for both work and play, and find it to be
something I really miss, if I don’t have it with me.  It is a couple of steps up in price and features from the low cost
models, but is still reasonably priced.  This middle of the road model has features, such as being water-proof and
floating, which is something that is priceless to me when I take it kayaking.  It is also equipped with an electronic
compass and barometric altimeter The altimeter is a great feature and can also be used to track changes in weather,
and being the weather buff that I am, is something that I find very useful. The GPSMAP 76S is preloaded with a
basemap of principle cities, interstates (including exits), highways and roads as well as marine navigation aids,
including lights, buoys, sound signals and day beacons. It also has 24 MB of internal memory, so you can load
detailed maps from a variety of optional MapSource® products. If you're into boating, hunting or fishing you can use
the built-in celestial data, which includes tide information, sunrise/sunset times and a hunting and fishing calendar.

Pros: Excellent quality, never had a problem with it during 3 years of very hard use.  It being water proof is one of best
things to have in a GPS.

Cons: Mine seems to eat batteries in much faster than the 16 hours, but I use rechargeable batteries with a solar
backpacking recharger, so that’s not too big of an issue.  The unit is also a bit large compared to some other models,
making it little cumbersome.
