Oso
Brief Biography
The 'about me' that is 'about him'. Written by
another about Oso, and not by Oso. Because the
best way to see a man is through another's eyes.
What is there to say about my best friend that is not
summed up in the excellence of the fiery sun above
and the coolness of the green earth below? For he
partakes of these, and they are a part of him
inseparable from his person. Bright flame and mossy
rock. What words can I offer concerning his character
that are more profound than the whispering of the
wind above the pinion pines upon the craggy butte?
He, too, bears that rugged fidelity of spirit in standing
alone and upright, regardless of what wind blows and
what storm rages. Strong-rooted and enduring,
Dependable and True. And what better image can my
words paint concerning the goodness of his heart,
and the nobleness of his mind, than that of a
high-mountain lake as it lies still and quiet upon an
early morn, reflecting the verdant trees, the blue
mountains, and the regal form of a hawk soaring high
above? I do not know, but the prose of the Natural
World says it well. He is that kind of man.
As for 'the other particulars', Oso is your not-so-average unmarried white male with the hair of
his Viking forebears and the dark eyes of his great-great-great-grandfather Quannah Parker. He was
born shortly after the longest day of the year in 1974. He grew up camping, hiking, and canoeing on
family vacations. He started solo-trekking as soon as he was able to put 'the city' in his rear-view mirror.
For the most part Oso prefers desert landscapes. His favorite places are the Gila Wilderness, Taos Box,
Big Bend, Davis Mountains, Enchanted Rock, and the Santa Fe National Forest. The playgrounds of
roadrunners and prickly pears. The Southwest at its best.
He went to university for a degree in art design, focusing on stone sculpture, but after several years he
ran out of money and found himself a job in the horticultural industry working in a nursery. Serendipity
and vision combined into an obsession of heart and mind that was the beginning of a long path and a
rewarding profession. A Path that now finds him in prairie restoration and seed farming. A lifestyle of
touching the Earth with his heart and his hands.
Some of his interests include, but are not limited to: geology, natural history, meteorology, astronomy,
ecology, mythology, biology, botany, mycology, herpetology, ethnobotany, tracking, fishing, kayaking,
camping, hiking, backpacking, sustainable living, organic gardening, native plant movement, restoration,
zoology, hydrology, primitive living skills, liberty, justice, and truth.
Oso is an active member of the Native American Church. He is a well-inked world-traveler and
multicultural polyglot. A 'big scary tattoed-and-pierced hulk of a man' adored by children and doted on by
grandmothers. He hates excuses. He disdains modern consumer culture. He's an avid reader who
doesn't watch or even own a TV.
Oso's feet are planted firmly upon Terra Firma within his vocation, and within his avocation it is in the
wild places that he seeks both his solace and adventure.
Finally, I will leave you with two simple quotes by Oso.
"a good fire will fix most problems" and "a cut fence is a good fence".
The End.
